During my summer vacation, I listened to the episode of Lenny’s Podcast where Lenny talks with Noam Segal about their second annual Tech Worker Sentiment Study in 2026, roughly 6,000 respondents from across the tech industry. I only meant to skim it. I ended up listening till the end, because I recognized myself in more than one place.
A few numbers: Burnout jumped from 44.7% to 55.7% in a single year. Career optimism dropped at the same time. More than half of respondents would steer a newcomer away from their own role, even though they’re personally fine with the path they chose. AI sits at the center of all of it, though not quite in the way you’d expect. The core finding: whether someone feels amplified or shaken by AI predicts their wellbeing better than job, seniority, or company size combined. Nearly half feel amplified, more capable, more confident, more excited than ever. The rest land somewhere between “my role is being redefined” and genuinely destabilized. Only 22% worry about losing their job to AI. Far more worry about something else, being expected to do more for the same pay, and about the quality of their work quietly slipping. 82% say AI makes them more productive. But look closer, and “more productive” often just means more and faster, not better. Quality is lacking.

That part matches my own experience closely. I have less and less room to actually go deep, think something through, reflect.
Delivery takes priority, “good enough is good enough” becomes the quiet default.
And when responsibility and pace keep climbing while pay doesn’t, something stops adding up for me.
One caveat is worth naming. Lenny’s audience skews heavily toward product people and early AI adopters, and is likely more US centered than not. How well this transfers 1:1 to daily life for a European tech worker, I’d leave open. The pattern itself, more output, less depth, rising pressure, I still recognize firsthand.
I’d genuinely like to know where you’d place yourself. Amplified, shaken, or somewhere in the ambivalent middle, which is where 77% of respondents landed?
And more importantly: how are you meeting this moment?
